Is Rasgulla from Odisha or West Bengal?
Out of all the topics that makes us leave our computers and zone out from very very important meetings at the offices, like Better street food Mumbai or Delhi? English- ICSE or CBSE? Better Friends School or College?, National drink Chai or Coffee?
I'm here to add one more topic as fuel to your already burning fire of questions. Rasgulla- from Odisha or West Bengal?
You remember during school days when the duster from your class is lost or you get two dusters from somewhere so you compare two of them and take the best one for your class. The same happens in life. When you get a perfect edible item or anything appealing. You want it to be yours, like people from West Bengal claim that Rasgulla belongs to them while the people from Odisha claim it to be theirs.
But from where does this sweet come up?
To answer this question, I searched a lot and even got an article about how to make it in 30 mins. Don't worry, I didn't give it a shot. Not now actually.
Coming back to the topic, To know more about its origin let's first see by how many names it is called all over the country...
The actual name is Rasgulla but different regions pronounce it differently like it's also called Rasagola, Rosogola, or Rosogolla, etc. It is popular in the Indian Subcontinent and regions with a South Asian diaspora.
What kind of sweet Rasgulla is?
It is a South Asian syrupy dessert popular in the Indian subcontinent and is made from ball-shaped dumplings of chhena and semolina dough. The main ingredient used is chhena and sugar.
Disputes:-The first time this dispute took place was in 2015 when Government formed a committee of Odisha claiming rasgulla as its own sweet.
However in 2016 the West Bengal government applied for a Geographical Indications (GI) tag for the variant called "Banglar Rosogolla" and said that the rasgulla made in Odisha is different in texture, color, juice content, etc.. from that made in West Bengal.
Giving West Bengal a taste of its own medicine Odisha government applied for GI status for "Odisha Rasagola" (Odia Rasagola) was declared different from Bengali Rasgulla, which got approved by the GI Registry of India and Odisha got its own Rasagola's GI status on 29 July 2019.
And like we never got the answer of who has the best street food Delhi or Mumbai..we are never gonna get the exact answer about the origin of rasgulla. When we order things like Dosa, Idli, etc ,its in our mind that it is South Indian and we can't take a flight again and again to travel to a place for their delicacies unless you're in a food vlogger... That's why we have everything available locally with the same taste, shape, texture. We just have to take our phones and order online.
Since we are not here to make two amazing states fight over a delicacy that can be enjoyed all over India. And instead of having a conflict over who is making what, we should sometimes give a treat to ourselves by buying these amazing sweets and relieve our souls from all the stress this corporate environment is giving us. The price of rasgulla is definitely not more than the amount we spend on our data add on's. You can spend a specific amount of money for your work and not for your cravings. So bad!
How much time does it take to order something you crave? 5 mins. So Have a break for yourself. Either buy online or go to stores, but don't forget to relieve your soul.
